Zohran Mamdani Pledges a 'New Era' for New York City in Inaugural Address
On his first day in the mayor's office, Zohran Mamdani vowed to “transform” America's largest city, ushering in “a new era” and an ambitious beginning to his administration.
An Unprecedented Figure
The 34-year-old democratic socialist, who was a virtually unknown state assemblyman, has become the city's first mayor born in Africa. He additionally marked a milestone by being the first to be sworn in using the Islamic holy text.

As his term begins, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Astoria apartment to the historic mayoral residence. The outgoing mayor offered a unusual warning about a reputed friendly ghost in the home, which allegedly only haunts those who fail to “do right by the city.”
